Advantages and disadvantages of wind energy

Wind energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy known, as its name implies, its source we obtain it from the force of the wind and then convert it into electric energy that can be used at domestic and industrial level.

Advantages and disadvantages of wind energy

How Wind Energy works

Many people think that wind energy works by means of turbines with wind-trapping propellers to generate electricity. However, this process is a little more complex than that. So how do wind turbines produce electricity? By the following steps:

  1. Propeller-like blades catch the wind and make them spin.
  2. The power caused by the movement of the leaf rotates the main axis.
  3. Main shaft is connected to a generator that then makes electricity.
  4. The electricity produced by the turbine generators is sent to a substation for collection before transmitting it to the electrical grid, where it can be distributed to the customers.

Wind Power Advantages

  1. Energy  type  renewable energy, because when we come from the wind, we know that it is an inexhaustible source.
  2. Clean and highly efficient energy therefore it is not polluting and much less air level.
  3. It does not emit toxic substances that adversely affect the environment.
  4. Because it is an energy that can be obtained locally, it is not necessary to import the energy itself.
  5. Its implantation generates an increase in the direct and indirect employment.
  6. Does not affect the ozone layer because it does not release CO2
  7. Wind turbines have a very long lifespan.
  8. Despite the magnitude of wind farms, these are easy to assemble and dismantle.
  9. They generate little impact at the level of the soil surface.
  10. Its installation does not interfere with other activities in the field.

Wind Power Disadvantages

  1. It requires large tracts of land to install the windmills.
  2. The wind in its force is usually variable, therefore the energy gain is not continuous.
  3. It generates some electromagnetic interference.
  4. There is an important ecological impact, as it increases mortality in birds that have their habitat in the mills area.
  5. There are significant delays between the planning of the construction of the wind farm until its start-up.
  6. The electrical energy obtained must be consumed immediately, as it cannot be stored.
  7. If the wind speed exceeds the turbine’s tolerance, these may result in severe damage.
  8. It is an auxiliary power source, up to the moment it is not suitable to be a main source.
  9. Costs for maintenance of mills are expensive.
  10. The installation of many wind turbines is required to monetize the service.
